From the large number of Indian universities and colleges only a minority part forms the national science and technology top. In India a high position in the rankings represents; the first choice of the best students, increased revenues from contract research and better opportunities for internationalization. The differences in quality between institutions, but also within faculties themselves are very large. The Institutes of National Importance in India are scoring well in national university rankings. Unfortunately the top of Indian education institutes are not yet or barely visible on the international rankings. Due the limited study places at top universities & colleges, and as a result of economic growth, a trend identified in the choice that Indian students make. Wide availability, knowledge utilization and salary prospectives are playing an important role in the decission process. Today it is getting harder and harder to get students interested in science. The market lures.



Introduction

The competition to get a hotspot on the best universities and colleges in India is unprecedented vigorously. The number of places available is limited. Many young students are forced to choose for their second, maybe better choice. Engineering, Technology and Medicine are still the most popular graduation directions. But new educational courses & programs like hotel management, media, fashion and health care are also hot, a direct consequence of the rapidly growing indian market and internationalization which India goes through.

At this moment elite educational institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology and All Indian Institute of Medicine take key positions in the specific niche rankings. But a number of private institutes get back quickly. Privatization seems to contribute to improving the quality of education in India, but the differences in quality is still very high at this moment and is not expected to change quick, both between institutions and faculties.



Institutes of National Importance

In India, 21 institutes are declared as Institutes of National Importance (INI’s). They are the absolute top education institutes in India. The seven top INI’s include the famous Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT’s) at Kharagpur, Mumbai, Chennai, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati and Roorkee. There are also six Indian Institutes of Management (IIM’s) making part of the INI programs, including those at Ahmedabad, Bangelore, Indore, Kolkata, Kozhikode and Lucknow.

Finally, the Indian Institutes of Science (IISc) and some medical universities are included in this Top Indian Education Ranking. For example a the All Indian Institute for Medical Science (AIIMS) in Delhi, Tiranal the Sree Chitra Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research and the Pharmaceutical Education and Research are included to this list.



Within various IIT’s Center of Advanced Study and Research are being implemented, a result of the prioritization of technical-scientific research of the Indian Government, for example in the field of energy (including renewable energy), materials technology and maritime technology.



The IIT’s offer a wide range of Bachelor or Master Degrees in different disciplines. All IIT offer PhD programs. Nearly 80 percent of the PhD’s in engineering is from the IIT’s, IIM’s and IIS together.



Research on the IIM’s is not limited only to the commercial industry. But also serves the non-corporate sector such as agriculture and rural development. Within the IISc programs education and research is mainly focused around the following disciplines; communication electronics, aeronautics, heat-power, high-voltage systems, energy, biochemistry, chemistry, physics and mathematics, automation and control systems and electronic design.



Top Universities & Colleges

Recently, the survey of the college Outlook published an overview of the top education institutes in India. Also a large number of Indian university lecturers and professionals are asked to give their opinions about several institutions. The final score was determined on the basis of weighing factors for each institute.



Medical universities highlighted

India has several world class medical universities, such as AIIMS. This university, with a strong team of teachers, the published last year over 1200 medical articles and the university hospital treats more than 3.5 million patients per year. Many medical schools do not satisfy the minimum requirements as regards intellectual capital or infrastructure, as prepared by the MCI (Medical Council of India).
